Quest for Quepos
Manuel Antonio's Hidden History
Ponce de León, the Spanish explorer, whose futile search for the Fountain of Youth became his signature expedition, is rarely recognized for one of his greatest discoveries - Quepos and Manuel Antonio - which he put on the charts in 1519. So abundant are the riches of Costa Rica's Central Pacific coast, that he might have found his fabled fountain had he gone ashore and explored the region's.

Manuel Antonio
Province: North Puntarenas
Manuel Antonio is one of the most exclusive areas in Costa Rica, however budget hotels can be found. It started out as a tiny village that had a beautiful National Park, Manuel Antonio National Park, next to it. As the park started to become more known more hotels started springing up. Because of Manuel Antonio’s size, or lack of size, hotels started building on the road to Manuel Antonio and many started taking advantage of the magnificent panoramic views. Soon very exclusive hotels arrived, thus bringing us to present day Manuel Antonio, however budget hotels can be found but most are found down near the beach. More expensive hotels have loftier, breezy perches and most offer off season rates. Many hilltop hotels may have steep steps; inquire. It can be a tough, hot walk back up the hill from the beach if you don’t want to wait for the bus, however this does run every half hour. The National Park is small only 682 hectares however it epitomizes everything tourists flock to Costa Rica to see: stunning beaches, a magnificent setting with islands offshore, lush rainforest laced with a network of easy to walk trails, and wildlife galore. There is good chance that you will see monkeys (howler, white faced, and possibly squirrel monkeys), sloths, and coatimundis. Scarlet macaws do frequent the area however you may need a bit of luck to see them. Despite Manuel Antonio’s size, it is one of the country’s most popular parks, with as many as 150,000 visitors annually in recent years. A few years ago the deluge of visitors threatened to spoil the very things they had come to see. Park Director Jose Antonio Salazar believes the park can withstand no more than 300 visitors a day. In 1994, the Park Service began limiting the numbers of visitors to 600 per day (800 on Saturday and Sunday), and the park is now closed on Monday. If you wish to do your bit to help preserve Manuel Antonio, consider visiting in the “green” or wet season. Litter and pollution are additional problems, pack out what you pack in. Nonetheless, the park is too small to sustain a healthy and viable population of certain animals. If the monkeys do not have access to areas outside the park, the population will decline because they cannot breed. Corridors that allow the animals’ access to areas outside the park have been taken up by hotels, so that the park has, in recent years, become an island. As a result, the squirrel monkey (mono titi) population is declining. Fortunately, in 2000, a decree was issued to triple the park’s size to just under 1800 hectares, almost tripling the size of the park.
Manuel Antonio National Park
Manuel Antonio National Park, lying on the pacific coast 7 kilometers south of the town of Quepos between Damas and Matapalos, was created in 1972 at a time when the area was poised for massive tourism development, founded primarily by foreign interests. The land constituting the park had, by then, gone through several different foreign owners. Today, the park protects a beautiful remnant piece of the tropical forest that once covered a wide variety of marine life.
With one of the most stunning, picture-postcard backdrops in the country, this is one of the lushest places in Costa Rica, with spectacular white-grey sand beaches fringed by thickly forested green hills. There is a huge variety of things to do- walking the Park's easy trails, whitewater rafting, ocean cruising, horseback riding, fishing, sea kayaking, to name but a few.
Manuel Antonio is one of Costa Rica's best known and most often visited park, despite the fact that it's also the smallest. The park is an island of verdant wildness in a rapidly developing area with a relatively intact wet tropical forest and abundant wildlife.
This park has a remarkably long list of species inhabiting it: brown pelicans, brown boobies, tyrant hawk-eagles, gray-headed chachalacas, solater's ant bird, coatimundis, two and three toed sloths, toed anteaters, ocelots amongst others.
Welcome to Manuel Antonio Between the Rainforest and the Beach
Within a relatively small corner of Costa Rica, tourists can find the excitement and adventure of a vacation in the tropical forest, surrounded by one of the country?s most beautiful natural environments, without sacrificing life?s modern conveniences. There?s a magic to Manuel Antonio that is hard to explain. One thing, however, is absolutely certain: once you?ve been here you?ll want to come back again.
Manuel Antonio, with its 1700 acres of land mass and 135,906 acres of marine reserve, is the smallest of the 20 national parks Costa Rica has put aside for total protection. Even so, it is the country?s second most visited conservation area, after the Poas Volcano.
Last year alone, 143,520 tourists visited the park. Conservation officials have fixed the park?s carrying capacity at 600 people per day from Tuesdays to Fridays, and 800 on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. On Mondays the park is closed to the public. ?If there are already 600 visitors at 10 a.m., we close it right then?, said Javier Herrera, in charge of environmental education at the park, which is usually open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Located 100 miles south of San Jos?n the Pacific Coast (a pleasant three-hour drive, or a short 20 minutes by plane), Manuel Antonio, which was declared a national park in 1972, is the natural habitat of species such as the endangered squirrel monkey (endemic to the area), white faced capuchin monkey, raccoons, three and two-toed sloths, white-nosed coaties, brown pelicans, black-collared hawks and green kingfishers. They share the space with primary and secondary forests, bursting with cedars, bully trees, locust ?sur?, black locusts and silk cotton trees. A mangrove swamp covers about 44.5 acres, adding to the biodiversity of the region. Three different species: red mangrove, buttonwood mangrove and white mangrove - around.

Manuel Antonio National Park

his park is just south of Quepos on the Pacific Coast, 132 km from San José. Perhaps It is so popular because of its expensive white sand beaches backed by an evergreen forest that grows right up to the high tide line. The principal habitants are primary forest, secondary forest, mangrove swamps, lagoons and beach vegetation. There is quite a varied fauna with 109 species of mammals and 184 of birds. The park includes 12 little isles just off the coast; these are a number of dolphins and, at times, migrating whales can be observed. More...

Manuel Antonio Costa Rica
Set high above the enchanting national park, Manuel Antonio boasts world-class views and beaches. Accommodation choices are plentiful, with some of the country's most inspired lodging options to choose from. Just imagine sparkling white sandy beaches, shimmering blue water and the fresh ocean breeze, all from the rocking chair on your patio. You'll feel stress magically leave your body as you soak up the sun in
Between the main town and the national park, there are several world-class beaches in the area. Here, you can enjoy the wide variety of activities such as swimming, hiking the Manuel Antonio National Park, surfing, or simply relaxing while watching a vibrant sunset.
Manuel Antonio is one of only two locations in Costa Rica where you can see all four types of monkey; spider, howler, white faced and the endangered squirrel monkey, many of which can be visible from your hotel window. The area is also a prime destination for spotting sloths, both in and outside of the national park
This once tiny town has blossomed into the most popular Costa Rican beach destination. Available are all the amenities you would come to expect as well as a jumping nightlife.
Access to the area is possible along Coastal Highway 34 from either the north or south. The drive itself is popular among tourists as pronounced steep cliffs crash into the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. There is also a domestic airstrip in Quepos, just 7km away. Be sure to keep an eye on your valuables at all times. Theft is a significant problem on the beaches, not just by humans but also by white faced monkeys looking to steal a quick snack.
Welcome to Manuel Antonio! Home to Costa Rica’s most famous National Park. Welcome to a place where luscious tropical rainforest meets breathtaking white sand beaches. Where monkeys and rare birds create an unforgettable symphony of jungle sounds. Where the water is always 82 degrees. And the morning sun greets you with a big, beautiful smile.
What makes this adventure playground even more special is that it’s easy to get to – no other park in Costa Rica boasts such convenient access and good infrastructure, including ample public transportation and complimentary hotel beach shuttles.
Manuel Antonio and the adjacent port town of Quepos are the perfect alternative to the runaway development of the Caribbean or the Mexican Riviera. Hotels average 20, not 200 rooms, and 2 -rather than 22 stories. Think of it as the boutique alternative to the normal tourist destinations.
The general area has a population of about 12,000 inhabitants, a docking pier and safe anchorage. Built by the United Fruit Company, the town of Quepos was constructed in the 30’s. Initially, it was used to export bananas, then palm oil. Today, its main source of income is tourism (which is a far better option than previous non-sustainable industries). Manuel Antonio is a Quepos suburb and has one primary school and one Catholic Church. Starbucks? Golden Arches? Sorry, not for at least 100 kilometers in any direction.
Manuel Antonio is considered the most beautiful coastline in the Central Pacific. The perfect backdrop for “The Blue Lagoon” or “Treasure Island,” with beaches and rainforest hand-sculpted by mother nature herself. Discreetly integrated into the most ideal jungle hilltop, the eco-designed Hotel Si Como No provides comfort and luxury to all its guests. From our location, you can visit miles of sandy beaches, the National Park, mangroves, the Private Wildlife Refuge and butterfly garden, or enjoy a variety of water sports and local shopping, all conveniently located close by.
The charming town of Quepos boasts enough nightlife for the young and not-so-young to “salsa” until the wee hours of the morning at the local discos. Or, if you’re in the mood for something considerably softer, all you need to do is enjoy a peaceful evening on your balcony under the stars listening to our live acoustic trio, “Los Tres Caciques.”
At Si Como No, we’re proud to make our “national treasure” available to all who love and respect nature.
Manuel Antonio
Central Pacific (w/ Manuel Antonio)
Perhaps the most popular tourist destination in Costa Rica, the Central Pacific region of the country is also the most easily accessible. Just a short distance from the capital San Jose either by domestic plane or car, this area is known for its beautiful beaches, touristy coastal resort towns and fantastic surfing opportunities. Offering visitors a plethora of activities to enjoy, including sportfishing and sunbathing, undoubtedly, the biggest crowd puller of this area is the wonderful Manuel Antonio National Park. With its lush dense forestation and stunning shoreline ideal for swimming or bird watching, the Manuel Antonio National Park attracts the highest number of tourists in the country. Manuel Antonio is surrounded by a huge number of hotels and restaurants and offering fantastic views of the Pacific Ocean, this national park is home to many endemic species of plant and animal life. Nearby sits the town of Manuel Antonio, a good place to use as a base while exploring the park. However, do be careful, as during peak tourist season this town can get quite expensive and crowded. When visiting the Manuel Antonio National Park, one of the best and more economical places to stay at is in Quepos, around 7 kilometers away. This rapidly booming tourist town is the sportfishing capital of Costa Rica, with its own small airport and boasting a number of cozy hotels, chic restaurants and an active nightlife. North of Quepos is the popular resort town of Jaco, which for a long time has been a pillar of tourism in Costa Rica. Due to its close proximity to San Jose City, this beach town is the ideal spring board for those touring the west coast and its wonderful beaches. Nearby Jaco is the excellent surf town of Playa Hermosa, which even hosts an international surfing competition every year. A good place to visit while exploring Costa Rica’s Central Pacific region, is the provincial capital of Puntarenas City. A bustling seaport, this city offers some of the best seafood and Costa Rican cuisine on the Pacific Coast. If you prefer a more quiet and relaxing time, then head down south to the town of Dominical, with some good surfing and nice beach resorts. South of Dominical are a number of isolated beaches perfect for those who require some much needed respite from city life, like Playa Uvita.
Manuel Antonio National Park was born from the desire of the people in the region to preserve their access to one of the most beautiful parts of Costa Rica. As David Rains Wallace describes it in The Quetzal and the Macaw, “Despite it’s relatively tiny size, it was still bursting with biodiversity in 1990. I’d rarely seen so much wildlife in a rainforest area. On a short trail leading from the beaches into the hills, three-toed sloths were visible every few hundred feet, draped like soiled scatter-rugs over cecropia trees. Troops of squirrel monkeys fed busily on swarms of green and black grasshoppers…”
The citizens of Quepos had enjoyed the area for generations until it passed into the hands of a series of developers. When one of them, Arthur Bergeron, began cutting trees and erecting gates on the road in preparation for constructing a private resort the locals reacted by requesting the Costa Rican Legislative Assembly to protect the area for all to enjoy.
Attractions Manuel Antonio is the most popular National Park with Ticos. One reason for this is the unspoiled beaches that lie within easy walking distance of the entrance station. The overhanging palms are a refreshing break from the bars, discos, hotels and restaurants surrounding the park
Besides the spectacular beaches, Manuel Antonio offers several kilometers of very well maintained trails offering the easiest access in Costa Rica to the lowland rainforest.
Many Costa Rican school children visit Manuel Antonio on field trips. The park has an extensive education program for schools, organizations, and independent visitors.
In the region: There are numerous agencies offering deep sea fishing excursions in the region. The competition seems to have driven the prices lower in Quepos than at the travel desk or in the lobby of the hotels near the entrance to Manuel Antonio.
Other activities available from your hotel desk or the tour kiosks in the area include day trips to Caño Island (snorkeling and scuba diving), white water rafting and kayaking (in the wet season only), surf kayaking, and canopy tours.
There is excellent mountain biking inland towards the mountaintop pueblo of Nápoles. Get someone (or hire a jeep taxi) to drive you up, then cruise down. We came in from San José by bicycle and only rode down this side, but can assure you that the ride up would be a tough one.
Half an hour south, Dominical is a surf hangout with a more laid-back, less commercial feel than Playa Jacó to the North.
Continuing south (35 miles, 58 km from Quepos) you'll reach the highly recommended Lodge at Rancho Merced National Wildlife refuge, and Marino Ballena National Park.

Mango Moon Hotel
The Mango Moon is located in Manuel Antonio along Costa Rica’s Central Pacific coast, perched upon a hilltop between the entrance of the Manuel Antonio National Park and the fishing town of Quepos. This area is known for its spectacular beauty, diverse wildlife, and wide array of activities.
Mango Moon Hotel
Manuel Antonio is a premier Costa Rican destination that boasts gorgeous nature and wildlife, wonderful shops and restaurants, and tons of activity. The thick jungle foliage of the Manuel Antonio National Park spreads to the edge of beautiful, white-sand beaches and the mighty Pacific Ocean. The park is easy to access and popular among nature lovers, honeymooners, and adrenaline junkies alike. There are all sorts of nature trails, waterfalls, rivers, mangroves, and wildlife – with everything from monkeys to birds to sloths – scattered throughout the park. There are canopy-tours, horseback trips, and rafting excursions that visitors can enjoy as well. Beaches abide and are often good for surfing and snorkeling. The port town of Quepos is a fine place to fish for Tuna, Marlin, or Sailfish out in the ocean, and also offers excellent restaurants and bars, small boutiques and surf shops. The Mango Moon is small, with accommodations that are comfortable and casual, and a staff that is helpful and friendly. The décor is informal yet elegant, with rooms that are clean and spaciously arranged. Many have their own balcony or else share a balcony that looks out to the majestic ocean. There are special “family suites” located higher up, which have connecting rooms. However, don’t be duped by the name of these suites – the Mango Moon doesn’t allow small children to stay at the hotel. This is, perhaps, to reinforce the tranquil atmosphere that the hotel has created. There is a bar on the ground level where guests can watch the sea roll endlessly and spot monkeys in nearby trees, all while tropical birds provide a natural soundtrack. Every morning, breakfast is served along the hotel’s veranda, combining tasty food with a cool ocean breeze. The services are equally far reaching, and are augmented by a staff that works extra hard to provide guests with an optimal travel experience. Spa Los Altos is one of the resort’s biggest attractions. Run by skilled and certified professionals, this spa provides high quality beauty, skin and massage services. The range of treatments – including facials, scrubs, and raindrop therapy – guarantees that guests will leave feeling relaxed, refreshed and renewed. If, however, you want to relax your body through movement, you can visit the resort’s fitness room. Los Altos’ belief is that guests are most happy when they are healthy; to this effect, the gym is equipped with a number of strength and cardio machines. Need to cool off? The solution is simple – just walk down to the infinity swimming pool, where you can immerse, unburden, and enjoy unrivaled views of the ocean. The freshwater pool has a shallow end for children, while two bubbly Jacuzzis provide yet another place to relax. If, however, you’re in the mood for more natural refreshment, you can visit the resort’s private beach and dip into the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean. Karolas, Los Altos’ gourmet restaurant and bar, is an open-air affair with commanding ocean views. The varied menu offers a flavorful combination of comidas tipicas (local food) and internationally inspired dishes. Only the finest cuts of meat and the freshest produce are used, making for meals that are healthy, filling and delicious. Inspired by Balinese architecture and design, the suites at Los Altos are spacious, classy and clean. Exotic hardwoods and rattan furniture give them a tropical feel, while their ample amenities make them exceedingly modern. The Suu Hotel
Manuel Antonio, the setting for the Suu Hotel, is one of Costa Rica’s most renowned natural playgrounds. Located along the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica, Manuel Antonio has hiking and biking, swimming and snorkeling, lounging, beaching, eating and more.
The Suu Hotel
The internationally renowned Manuel Antonio National Park offers visitors a great variety of hiking trails and biodiversity. It’s one of the only places in the country where you can see all four types of resident monkeys, along with sloths, birds, iguanas and more. Snorkeling and scuba diving can be enjoyed in the waters offshore, as well as sport fishing, which angles deep for large and impressive fish. Canopy tours, horseback riding, and ocean kayaking are also on offer in Manuel Antonio. The town is equipped with most services and amenities, including restaurants, bars and shops. The Suu Hotel, located only minutes from the Manuel Antonio National Park, is set on a piece of land that is equally spectacular in its own right. Perched atop a verdant hillside that overlooks both the ocean and nearby rainforest, the views of sand, sun, surf and forest are unmatched. What’s more, the white-sanded Biesanz Beach is only a short walk away, providing visitors with a convenient oceanfront place to relax. The hotel itself is composed of 28 contemporary rooms. The minimalist décor – which emphasizes straight lines and white colors – is a refreshing contrast to the brightly colored and biologically diverse world outside the hotel. Accommodations are comfortable and private, and include wireless internet, cable TV, espresso coffee machine, and an iPod docking station. Balconies extend the rooms outside, offering up expansive vistas of the ocean and jungle. A swanky, large swimming pool lies beneath the hotel. Lounge chairs and shade umbrellas surround its edges, as does a hot tub, where guests can unwind after a day spent exploring Manuel Antonio. Another way to pursue relaxation is at the hotel’s spa, which offers a variety of healing treatments both indoors and outdoors. Yoga and pilates classes are additionally on tap for guests wishing to stretch, flex, and de-stress. A restaurant caters to the culinary desires of guests with its fresh ingredients and round-the-clock service. Breakfast can be enjoyed on the privacy of your own terrace, or a light lunch around the pool. Intimate dinners overlooking the sea are a favorite, as is the top-notch room service, which runs 24-hours a day. A bar abuts the restaurant, offering premium beers, liquors, wines and more.
