Why Study Spanish in Samara Beach?
Founded by Laura Ellington and Adelita Jímenez, Intercultura Spanish School has been growing since 1993 by listening and acting on what students have to say. We've maintained our original mission to give students a superior level of service while they study Spanish and experience all that Costa Rica has to offer and we continually are looking for ways to improve our students' experiences. In 2001, we opened the Playa Samara beach campus, located directly on Costa Rica's Pacific Coast.
What our Spanish Courses Offer
At Intercultura, we believe that the best way to study Spanish includes a diverse and enriched curriculum along with cultural experiences to make an easy transition from your first language to Spanish! You will enjoy studying Spanish in class, during daily cultural activities, in your homestay family and in the community.
Our Spanish teachers are certified through Costa Rican Universities and the government and are outstanding at what they do. They work closely with you, ensuring excellent, interesting and practical classes that enhance language development. We offer small classes with 6 students maximum and use the communicative approach of language teaching which encourages fully engaged students and getting them on the road to successful language learning! Our methodology encourages students to speak as much Spanish as possible so our teachers use the 80/20 rule - teachers only speak 20% of the time while Spanish students speak 80% of the time. Between our home stays with ‘Tico’ (Costa Rican) families and our intensive classes you’ll be speaking Spanish right away!
Two great campuses
Intercultura Spanish Language School offers students the freedom to study at its busy, colonial city campus in Heredia or our beautiful beach campus in Samara. Many students choose to study at both locations, fully embracing the different cultures Costa Rica offers, as well as to experience our varied offerings at each campus.
Our Mission at Samara Language School
Intercultura and Samara Spanish Language Schools are language and cultural centers devoted to achieving linguistic proficiency through cultural immersion and crosscultural education. We seek to cultivate global understanding and cooperation through the sharing of cultures and languages. We believe that participation in our program teaches not only a new language, but also effective tools for communication and understanding in the constantly evolving world culture -- “Learn the language, live the culture.”
Our vision is to provide Spanish courses based on an integral language learning and cultural experience. We use the communicative approach of teaching combined with strategic elements of current academic and pedagogical theory in a cultural immersion environment, contextualizing the language acquisition process. Additionally, we are at the forefront of the linguistic and intercultural studies field and are focused on creating new programs, expanding and improving our facilities, while also continuing the professional development of our staff and reinvesting in local communities.

Samara Spanish Language School is located in Playa Samara, directly on the beach in beautiful beachfront facilities. Spanish courses are given in modern, air-conditioned rooms, all with a view of the ocean, providing an ideal spot for learning Spanish at the beach. Each classroom is equipped with AC, standard audio equipment, whiteboard, and a large communal study space, encouraging dynamic activities and easy participation. The beach provides an ideal break from the midday heat or for a quick swim during your break. Sometimes our Spanish teachers take students outside the facilities to hold a conversation hour in our rancho, the tropical gardens, or on the beach under the shade of a palm tree. Ecological trips, community interviews and other activities help students practice Spanish "en vivo" with local Costa Ricans.
Our school facilities include a large open-air rancho used for dance classes, yoga classes and other activities; a stage for performances, community activities and cultural events; a kitchen for student use; lounges, gardens, open-air classroom study areas, hammocks, and the reception and tour services desk. Nearby restaurants and open air cafés and bars provide ample places to relax and chat with friends, drink coffee or try the delicious local tropical fruit shakes.

Costa Rica is situated on the narrow Central American isthmus directly north of Panama, with the Caribbean to the east and the Pacific to the west. Intercultura has two Spanish schools in Costa Rica, one in the colonial city of Heredia, founded in 1993, and the other on beautiful Samara beach that opened in 2001. Each campus and area has a distinctive flavour, giving students the chance to experience Costa Rica from two very different perspectives.
Samara Language Courses
Spanish Courses in Costa Rica on the beach
Spanish Courses in Costa Rica with Samara Language School. Our Spanish courses are designed to fully immerse students in real social interactions.
Excellent Language Courses
The primary goal of Intercultura and Samara Language School is to offer Spanish courses in a warm yet intellectually challenging environment. Classes are conducted entirely in Spanish, providing students from all over the world with a complete and intensive learning experience. Intercultura's professors have advanced university degrees and teaching certifications, and we are accredited through the U.S. university system, offering undergraduate academic credit to those interested. In addition, you have the opportunity to know Costa Rica, its traditions and its rich cultural heritage by participating in our daily cultural activities and events.
Superior Course Quality
The quality of our programs is among the highest and most recognized in Costa Rica and Latin America. We were selected to receive Spanish students from Duke University, the World Health Organization (WHO), Fulbright Commission teaching programs, the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS), University of Washington, the European Commission, the Costa Rican Consulate in the US, Colorado University, Collège de Maisonneuve, HEBO (Holland) and more. Intercultura is also the first academic institution in Costa Rica to gain official recognition by the United Nations (UN) as a partner in the UN Global Compact, upholding the principles of sustainable development and corporate responsibility in human rights, labor laws and environmental practices.
On a larger scale, we hope to promote global awareness and tolerance through sharing cultures. We believe that participation in our Spanish courses teaches a new language and also provides effective tools for communication and understanding in today's constantly evolving culture.
" In my role as a trainer of teachers, I am keenly aware of what constitutes effective instruction...as an educator, I recognized and experienced first-hand the excellence of Marcelo's instruction.....[He] has the ability to explain grammatical concepts with great clarity...he constructed excellent visuals which helped me comprehend and use the new learning. Equally effective was his insistence that all newly learned grammar be applied in conversation....It is my belief that [he] is an outstanding instructor, one of the finest I have encountered in my work as an educator."
-- Marc Becker, PhD, Director of high-school district Research and Assessment.
NOTE: To maintain academic consistency in the material covered in each level, classes with only 1 student may be reduced to 3 hours per day instead of 4. Exceptions may apply for academic credit candidates, and/or at the discretion of the program director.
Cultural Activites at Samara Language School
Spanischkurse und kulturelle Aktivitäten in Costa Rica
Study Spanish through the Culture
After you study Spanish during the day, you have your choice of activities that are conducted in Spanish. Students should check the notice boards in reception daily for times, sign-up sheets and specific information. We encourage all students to participate in as many activities as possible since they greatly enhance your understanding and connection to the culture.
Learn Spanish and Salsa dancing in Costa Rica
Latin dance classes
From Monday through Thursday students have the chance to move their hips in our Latin dance classes! You will learn salsa, merengue, cumbia bolero, and bachata -- all popular dances in Costa Rica. Then you can to go out to discos and dance with confidence and interact and practice your Spanish with Ticos. Our dance instructors in Samara, Karol and Julio, have years of experience dancing and touring and belong to the Intercultura International Folkloric Dance Group.
We hold periodic talks and informal gatherings that cover a diverse range of subjects such as the culture, ecology and environment of Costa Rica, Latin-American literature, politics, women's studies and other socially and culturally related themes. The discussions are held in Spanish.
Once a week we show a film in Spanish, an entertaining and practical way to practice the language and culture.
Costa Rican Cooking classes
Once a week, we teach students how to make typical Costa Rican dishes, a great skill to take home and share with friends and family. Learn to prepare tortillas de maiz, tortas de yuca, picadillos, empañadas de plátano y much more!
During these cultural exchanges, Spanish students meet with Tico English students at the school to practice conversation skills (in both languages) in a relaxed atmosphere, and to make new friends from the local community. It's a fantastic way to get to know locals students of all ages!
Latin music class
In this class, students learn traditional and modern songs from different Spanish-speaking countries, then analyze the meaning and cultural significance. This helps greatly in overall comprehension. Feel free to join in and bring your own instrument!
These local celebrations are held in all Costa Rican cities and villages every year, usually over a weekend. They are advertised throughout the country and are an excellent source of cultural enrichment and entertainment. You can watch bullfights "Tico" style, where the bull is not harmed in any way, participate in traditional games and try out a variety of local fare. The "fiestas" usually happen twice a year in Samara--close to Christmas and close to Semana Santa.
On weekends we host excursions to many different parts of the country. Possibilities range from relaxing on a white sand beach, to studying the complex ecosystems of the Monteverde Cloud Forest, to watching the eruptions of a live volcano! During the week we take students to soccer games, hidden beaches and local hikes.
MONTHLY ACTIVITIES CALENDAR:
Each month we have a new activity plan of special events, national holiday activities, and a variety of fun excursions which are accompanied by a school teacher or staff member and in which we encourage English students to participate so as to promote social interaction with the locals.
"I was very impressed with the professional manner in which the school was run. Both the teachers and directors were very accomodating in tailoring a program to fit my specific skills and needs....The classes were demanding and interesting, and after class, having fun with the cultural activities was the high point of my day!...My experiences with both the school and the family were exceptional."

THE HIDEAWAY HOTEL, Playa Samara
Uncommon quality, stunning beach, privacy.
The Hotel Lodge Las Ranas is located in Playa Samara in the northwestern part of Costa Rica; in the middle of the Guanacaste province. The province of Guanacaste is the hottest and the driest of Costa Rica; therefore the temperature is nice all year round, even during the raining season, which people here call invierno (winter).
Because of the relatively dry climate in the region, there isn’t a lot of mosquito and practically no infectious diseases are present here.
The region is characterized by a lot of farmland. Even though there are a lot of mountains, most of the province is flat thus accommodating a lot of agriculture like the sugar cane.
The Hotel Lodge Las Ranas The hotel has 10 rooms. All the rooms have a magnificent view of the mountain and the sea and are fully equipped:
We have 2 rooms with an additional single bed for kids, one room with kitchenette, which is wheel chair accessible, and 2 communicating rooms for larger groups.
The restaurant is offering you a diverse menu and has about 30 seats where you can relax before you head toward our safe swimming pool or toward the bar where you can enjoy what the Ticos call "la Pura Vida".
From the pool’s terrace, you’ll be able to watch the amazing variety of animals that are visiting us every day! Monkeys, parrots, iguanas, "pisote ", "martilla" and much more! If you’re really lucky, you might also have the chance to see the famous blue butterfly!
The Hotel Amenities
Free High-Speed Internet
Free Hot Breakfast
Our lodge is located a few minutes from the Pacific Ocean on the hills of the town of Samara. We therefore have a magnificent view of the Samara beach, which is one of the safest in the country.
From our restaurant, you can also admire the view of Buena Vista beach. This beach is secluded and unknown to most tourists in the area.
During your stay, you can enjoy our wonderful terrace on the edge of the mountain to make your afternoon cocktails more enjoyable or just to put your feet up and relax. Also, do not miss the wonderful sunset over the Pacific Ocean, which you can see from the restaurant.
We recommend that our guests take a flight that lands at the NEW terminal at Daniel Oduber International Airport near the city of Liberia because of its proximity.
From this airport you can choose to rent a car, arrange for a taxi shuttle or the more adventurous may want to use the local bus.
It is advised that you arrange your airport transportation in advance. We would be pleased to offer our assistance, given adequate notice. Our personal recommendation is to rent as car, which is absolutely safe in Costa Rica. This will allow you more freedom to visit the many tourist sites in the region and explore the vast array of beaches in our area.
We can arrange a number of tours such as:
Ocean Kayak and Snorkeling
Dolphin tour and snorkeling
Wild life and birding kayak tour
Horse back riding
Barra Honda Caves
Monteverde cloud Forest

Known as a safe and beautiful beach, Samara’s white-sand coast is strewn with coconut trees and pleasant shady spots. Sport fishing is quite popular here, as are kayak trips to Chora Island, a fleck of land nearby that acts as habitat for a wide range of birds. An offshore coral reef calms the water close to shore and also sports some excellent snorkeling and scuba diving sites. The village at Samara is scattered with stores, restaurants, and a few bars. There is also a disco that – although the town is quite small – draws consistently good numbers.

Set on a property that enjoys the company of centenarian trees, botanical gardens, and an ever-changing range of tropical critters, El Pequeño Gecko Verde is a true Costa Rican find. On-property afternoons can be spent lounging beside the large pool or taking walks to the nearby cliffs, which overlook the seemingly endless Pacific Ocean. Off-property afternoons can be spent on the beach, in the ocean, or through the hills. Hunger and thirst can be sated either in town or at the hotel’s restaurant, which serves meals with a “French touch” and its drinks always cold.
Five freestanding bungalows make up the lodging at El Pequeño Gecko Verde. Integrated naturally into the surrounding land, they are nicely equipped with comfortable amenities, plus local decorations – bright blue paintings and bamboo room dividers – that really brighten the place up. Each has a full kitchen, private hot water bathroom, air conditioning, cable TV, and safety deposit box. Private outdoor terraces are furnished with wooden dining areas and handmade hammocks.

TAXI BOAT FAQ’s:I am concerned about safety, do you offer life jackets for all of your passengers?
Actually our boats are the only ones in the area full equipped with life jackets, operation permits and insurances. Is the boat really \"rocky\"?
All depends on the ocean if the weather conditions are not good, we have to cancel the ocean operation and we help our clients to make the trip by land if necessary. Would you recommend that passengers take medicine for motion sickness?
Is a speed boat you hardly get sea sick, the movement is back and forward not side by side. Where do you put the luggage?
The luggage is covered with plastic bags and travel along the passengers. Can I go and come from the same location the same day?
Only 1 daily departure available from each location for the regular taxi boat, however is you arranged a private boat just for your party you would be able to come back the same day. Other option is spending the night over then come back the following day.I have a car rental can I leave it the Taxi Boat departure sport then pick up the following day when I return?
We always recommend to leave your car at your car rental office in Jaco, all car rentals in Costa Rica have a office in Jaco. This would be a safe place to leave your rental vehicle.

Taxi Boat to and from Jaco
The private speed boat, taxi boat or water taxi to Montezuma or Jaco is one of the best way of transportation in this area of Costa Rica. Saving up to 7 hours of hot and uncomfortable trip by land, the taxi boat most accurate way to get to Montezuma or Jaco.
Taxi Boat Jaco Montezuma
We ended up staying two nights here and then leaving via private taxi boat across the awesome Nicoya Gulf, ($30USD ea), for a 1 hour transfer to the to town of Jaco (which would have taken us at least 8 hours of busing / ferries to get to otherwise.
So in a few minutes we're off to taxi a “Taxi Boat” up the coast to Montezuma, which is on the peninsula on the north pacific side of Costa Rica. I've wanted to go to this area for a while now! See the image on how we'll cut across the ocean to get there. The boat is an hour instead of the many (treacherous) hours driving up the coast, and probably more scenic :)
